ALICE POV:

I heard a metallic snap. Slowly, I looked up from my hands and saw the monster staring in horror at the now much shorter knife. The blade lay on the floor at his feet. He slowly backed away from me in fear as I tried to concentrate. A few moments felt like hours, and I finally gave up trying to get my Vectors under control. Without second thought I turned and ran out of the bar and bolted home. I locked myself in my room and collapsed against the door, bawling. I thought I could control my Vectors. I thought I could handle them and I thought others would be safe around me. Clearly that wasn’t the case. I felt like I’d betrayed everyone, including myself.

I wasn’t sure how long it took the others to follow me. I’d finally calmed down and was sitting in silence, leaning against the door. I stared absently at the wall, thinking of what I could say when the others came home. Nothing came to mind. I heard the front door, then hushed whispers, footsteps, and finally silence. I listened. For a few minutes there was nothing. I sat against the door and curled myself up into a ball. I wondered if the monsters at Grillby’s had settled back down by now, or if they’d all left and gone home instead.

A stray Vector snaked towards the ceiling, and despite everything, I took control of it and brought it back down towards me. I gently stroked the surface, curious to know how it felt. It was glassy, but there was absolutely no friction so my hand slid over it easily, something I found ethereal. It wafted gently in the air like a flag, and I gazed through it at the distorted shape of my bed and the desk next to it. I felt calm, and one by one, the rest of my Vectors crept into the room and settled around me. I was suddenly startled by a soft knock at my door. A familiar voice floated through the wood.

“Hey Alice… Are you ok?” I desperately wanted to answer him but I couldn’t find anything to say. Nothing came out of my mouth. Sans sat down and leaned his back against the door. “Alice, it’s ok y’know? Come out of there and talk to us, we can help you.” I wanted to reach out to him, but with my dangerous ability I didn’t want to hurt him any more than I already had. My Vectors started shifting around more energetically as I became nervous, and I tried my best to keep them in check. I could see it wasn’t going to end well, and as my eyes darted around the room I found my escape. Almost on impulse I stood up and rushed to the window.

I had to get up on the desk to open it and lean out. The sky was clear blue, and not a single cloud rolled by as my Vectors reached out into the open. As nice as it felt to be safely in my room, I wanted to get away. I wanted to be alone. I wasn’t sure for how long, but I figured I’d know when I wanted to come back. I carefully climbed out, held on to the window ledge with my hands and lowered myself. I let go and dropped into the snow about 8 feet down. The snow felt soft and comfortable, but I wanted to go further. I stood up, got the snow off of my clothes and set off for the clearing deep in the forest.

SANS POV:

I wanted to go in and hold her. I hated it when she got upset, and Papyrus didn’t enjoy it either. He and Undyne joined me outside Alice’s room. Papyrus knocked smartly on the door. “Alice? Are you there? Please talk to us?” He pleaded. No answer. “… Where is she?” Undyne peeked through the keyhole. “Leave her alone guys... She probably doesn’t wanna talk right now…” I stood up and made my way downstairs, and the others followed me.

“We have to help her...” I lamented. Papyrus jumped up and ran into the kitchen. “Maybe she just needs some spaghetti!” he called out from behind the stove. A smile escaped me as I slipped my hands into my pockets. “Maybe bro.” Undyne got up and started up the stairs. She knocked loudly on Alice’s door and stood back for a moment with her hands on her hips. No answer. Defeated, she came back down. We both sat on the couch looking just about done with life when Papyrus waltzed towards the dining table with plates of spaghetti. “IT’S DINNER TIME!!” It dawned on me that we’d actually never eaten our food at Grillby’s, and I suddenly felt hungry. We sat down and ate our spaghetti, but Alice didn’t turn up.

Undyne went home after an hour, and Papyrus went out to work on his puzzles. I stayed inside, hoping Alice would reappear. I sat down to work on our latest jigsaw puzzle, a 3000-piecer that was proving to be difficult even for Papyrus. 3 hours and 4 measly pieces later, I became worried. I looked at the clock. 11PM. I didn’t want to invade Alice’s space, but I took a spare key out from under a small flowerpot on the fireplace and approached her room. I hesitated as the key turned in the lock, but despite my nerves I slowly peeked inside. She wasn’t there. My heart sank as my eyes fell on the open window above her desk. She’d run away. I stepped inside, wanting to get a better look just to be sure. She was nowhere to be found.

My heart raced as I ran to pick up the phone by the couch. Papyrus answered immediately. “Bro, Alice got out of her window and ran off! Have you seen her?!” I was getting frantic. “No brother, I haven’t. I’m sorry… I’ll look out for her!” “Y-you do that…” my voice was starting to crack as tears collected in my eyes. “... Brother, are you alright?” I thought about Alice out there in the cold. It had long been dark and I knew she’d have trouble getting back home. My knees gave in and I plopped roughly onto the couch. “No bro...”

The tears started falling. I didn’t hear Papyrus hanging up, but within minutes he burst in through the front door and picked me up in his arms. I bawled into his shoulder for a good 2 minutes before suddenly stopping. I felt overcome with a warm safe feeling, and despite my worries about Alice, I couldn’t help but doze off in Papyrus’ arms. He carried me to bed, and I spent the night struggling though unsettling dreams about Alice. In the morning I woke up with a terrible headache. As I got up it felt like a spear was assaulting the back of my head. I didn’t realise I was bobbing my head slightly until Papyrus’ shrill voice ripped through the thick air and into my ears.

“Brother why are you nodding like that?? Are you alright??” I winced and signalled for Papyrus to pipe down. I managed to drag myself to the table and sit down on a chair, but it was very difficult to see since opening my eyes to the bright light in the room felt like torture. It was nice to know Papyrus could put breakfast on the table quietly. I heard curtains closing, and I was relieved to feel my headache lifting ever so slightly. I felt a hand on my shoulder. Papyrus was careful not to whisper too loudly. “Brother... Do you need magic help?” The spears kept attacking my head harshly, but I managed to answer yes. Papyrus’ hand moved up to my head, and he very lightly held it there as his eyes lit up.

The fuzzy warmth of his healing magic seeped into my skull and spread slowly down towards my neck. The throbbing pain started to let up and I felt the pressure of the air around me drop back to normal. As Papyrus finished his spell, I felt a lot better. I opened my eyes and gave him my best goofy smile, but it quickly dropped as my thoughts switched over to Alice. My eyes widened as I sucked in a sudden gasp. “Where’s Alice??” I asked restlessly. Papyrus frowned sadly. “I think she somehow got back into her room while we were asleep last night, because I remember her door was open, and this morning it was locked again...”

ALICE POV:

Sans sighed deeply. “Papyrus I’m worried about her...” I listened carefully through my door as they talked about me. I’d been out all night trying to practice controlling my Vectors, but there hadn’t been much progress. “Maybe if we wait, she’ll come out.” Papyrus said hopefully. I held my breath for a moment... What had I done? I could already imagine how they’d wait for weeks and months while I ran off every day to work on my control. They’d be forced to spend sleepless nights worrying about me, and entire days trying to find me. I’d have to concentrate on keeping myself hidden from them more than on my practice. At the same time, I couldn’t bear to hurt them again. I had to do this, even if it hurt. It was for their own good.

I felt tears welling up in my eyes. I approached the window again, ready for another day in solitude with my Vectors. I climbed out and dropped into the snow, got up and ran as fast as I could. The little dog had returned to his snowdog and was building another one next to it. I kept running, and once I reached the clearing I felt more relaxed. I took a deep breath as 4 glassy arms slithered around me, and started my training. I was far from being able to hold them in when I got upset or scared, so for now I paid more attention to keeping them in check when they did come out. I practiced drawing straight and curved lines, more complex patterns and even the letter A, but all of those were shaky and in need of more work.

It was time for lunch. I’d managed to skip dinner and breakfast, but I just couldn’t help myself. I reluctantly started home, trying to plan how I’d get lunch without anyone seeing me. Along the way, a small boat floating along the river towards Snowdin caught my eye. There was a tall hooded figure standing in the boat, and they looked like they had another cloak with them. I bravely signalled him to stop. “Excuse me mister, can I borrow your spare cloak please?” I asked politely. The hooded figure had no signs of a face, and I felt uneasy as they silently reached down and picked the cloak. They handed it to me and I thanked them, but before I could turn around, a ghostly voice pierced my ears.

“Tra la la... Fear will be your undoing, little girl...” I froze. My breath caught in my chest and my heart skipped a beat. The figure let the cloak go in my hands and started his boat again down the river. I stood in silence for a few seconds before finally letting myself breathe again. The figure either had no idea how coincidental that sentence was, or had a frightening insight into people’s minds like some otherworldly spirit. My mind would have started racing with thoughts about the strange figure if it hadn’t been for my tummy rumbling loudly. I wrapped the cloak around myself and set off for Grillby’s.

I stepped nervously into the bar, hoping no one would recognise me. I lightly made my way towards the familiar flaming monster and sat down on one of the tall chairs. I did my best to hide my face as Grillby asked me what I wanted. “Can I get a burger to go, please.” Suddenly a voice sounded to my right. “Make that two, and put it on my tab, buddy!” It was Sans! Horrified, I shifted under the cloak, trying not to be seen. I felt Sans watching me. “... Hey... You new here?” He asked. I barely managed to stay long enough to collect my order, and once I had it, I rushed outside. That was way too close. I vowed to be more careful next time I tried that.

On my way back to the clearing, I considered leaving the cloak by the river for the figure to collect, but decided against it in case I needed it again and he wasn’t around to borrow it from. I started munching my burger, and back in the clearing I continued my training. Those burgers were filling enough to last all day, so from now on I’d be getting one in the morning. I kept thinking about Sans, how close he’d come to finding me. I didn’t want to go back to him just yet, I had too much work to do. But someday...

UNDYNE POV:

Alice broke down into tears and ran for the front door. Sans stood up but I put a firm hand on his chest and told him to relax, that I’d go talk to her. He frowned at me, paused for a moment, then sat back down. I marched out of the door onto the front deck and there was Alice, sitting on the steps in silence. In front of her there was an intricate design forming in the snow. I could guess what was making the patterns. I sat down next to her in silence for a few minutes, watching the scratches in the snow spread out further and further.

“Alice, do you want to learn to control them?” I asked eventually. Alice stopped scratching in the snow and turned her head towards me. Her blank stare was strangely unsettling. “Yeah.” “When do we start?” “Tomorrow, I guess...” “Awesome! I’ll come by with a plan, yeah?” “Sure thing, Undyne.” Alice seemed happier now. I sat for a while, watching more scratches appear in the snow. Eventually It resembled a beautiful snowflake, and Alice stopped. “It’s beautiful.” I said. I turned and yelled through the open front door. “Dorks, get out here and look at this!”

Papyrus was first on the scene. “Wowwie!! Did you draw that, Alice??” “Heh. Yeah.” Alice stood up just as Sans came out, turned round and smiled as he walked absently right into her arms. He blushed in surprise, and a heart melting smile formed on his face as he returned the gesture. As cute as the scene was, I had to interrupt it. "Tomorrow morning I'll drop in, and we're all gonna go out in the forest to help Alice get her Vectors under control." Papyrus seemed puzzled. "Us?? We're gonna do it together??" "Of course, silly!" I said loudly. "I have to go now, I still haven't fixed the window you broke the other day!" Papyrus looked away embarassed as I turned smartly and marched away through the snow.

ALICE POV:

I was sitting on the floor the next morning working on a jigsaw puzzle with Sans and Papyrus. Sans was more relaxed about the activity, but Papyrus was fitting pieces into their places lightning fast. I helped him, and we'd just finished a part of the picture featuring a fluffy kitten when war seemingly broke out around us. With a great battle-cry, Undyne busted into the house through the wall and stood proudly on top of the dining table, which strangely survived the grand entrance. "EVERYBODY UP AND OUT, LET'S GO LET'S GO!!" She shouted at the top of her lungs. The sheer amount of energy she had was enough to get even Sans up on his feet.

Within seconds we were all stood outside at attention, and Undyne paced back and forth in front if us. "Good morning!" she commanded. Three good mornings came back in reply, and she stopped pacing. "Today we're gonna help Alice learn to control her power. I'm taking us to a part of the forest where we'll have plenty of space, and I brought a picnic because we'll probably be there all day! Let's go dorks!!" She set off at a brisk walk through the town, passing by all the buildings and monsters without second thought. As we cruised by Grillby's, Sans gazed at the bar longingly.

We crossed the rope bridge and came to a pass with little mounds of snow lying around. Undyne was focusing on the walking and dragged us away from the perfect snowball fight, but I understood it was for the best. Further down the road, a dog was excitedly building snowdogs, but the dog he was working on had too much neck. And just as we passed by it, it toppled over and landed sloppily in a pile. The dog was ok, but he clearly looked upset and ran off into the trees.

The pass widened and became a large clearing, with some boulders arranged in a pile in the middle. I was starting to get tired. "Undyne it's been ages, are we there yet?" I moaned. Undyne suddenly stopped dead in her tracks, and we bumped into each other in quick succession, almist falling over. She turned on her heels to face us, and stood silently while we composed ourselves.

"Alice, just like you I discovered I had a gift. I had to learn to control it. You do too." With that, Undyne's face became focused. Suddenly she jumped impossibly high into the air, and came down on the topmost boulder in the pile. A large chunk of the rock broke away and flew off into the snow with a heavy thump. She made quick work of the rest of the boulder as we gaped in awe at her strength. With a final hop she landed neatly on one of the remaining three boulders.

"DO YOU WANT TO CONTROL IT, ALICE??" She yelled intensely across the clearing. I took a second to gather my strength and shouted back enthusiastically. "Yes Undyne!!" she jumped down and marched towards me. "Good. We'll start by judging your reach. Papyrus, Sans, get back!" She commanded. Sans stepped back a few feet while Papyrus bounded off much further. "Let it out Alice." I stared at Undyne in silence. "Y-you want me to just let it out into the open?" I stammered. Undyne frowned dangerously. "Duh. Come on."

I took a deep breath and felt my Vector extend slowly from my back. I felt its presence in full, like a heightened awareness of my surroundings. I felt like I could almost see Sans behind me, slipping his hands into his pockets. I allowed it to dip gingerly into the snow, leaving a scratch in the fluffy pure white surface. I slowly extended the mark around my left and into the space between me and Undyne.

"Wh-what's that??" Papyrus yelped in surprise. I tensed, fearing there would be another accident, but nothing happened. "It... It's a sheet of glass Sans! Do you see it??" He pointed at the deadly blade-like apparition, and being curious, I dropped my concentration. The end of the neat line suddenly split apart as the uncontrolled Vector started moving about randomly. I tried to focus on it again, and it settled down.

Undyne looked like she'd had an epiphany. "Alice? Were you actually focusing on that thing when Papyrus saw it?" “... Yeah...” I replied slowly. “Ok... So it becomes visible to us when you focus on it?" "I guess?" "Hm. See how far across the snow you can reach with it.” I tried to imagine my Vector reaching out in front of me, and as I did so, it seemed to listen. Slowly but surely, it stretched out more or less in a straight line, and stopped at about 30 feet. Undyne watched carefully while following the tip across the snow. When it stopped, she bent down and gently held her hand against the deadly edge. “... Sharp. Sans! Papyrus! Get your special attacks reads cuz we’re gonna need lots of targets!”

Sans and Papyrus were stood before me. Their eyes glowed as they each brought out a bone, and Undyne gestured to me to cut them in half. I hesitated for a moment, and instead of a single clean cut, Papyrus’ attack bone shattered awkwardly and vanished in a gentle amber flame. I tried again on Sans, and it seemed to go slightly better. There was much to improve on though. More and more attack bones appeared in pairs, and with practice the cuts got cleaner, sharper, quicker. An excited grin formed on my face as Sans launched various attacks at me, and I sliced effortlessly through each and every one. Undyne smiled proudly as I made quick delicate patterns all over the boulders, and Papyrus was quite happy with me practicing wrapping my Vector around his hand and shaking it.

It was soon lunchtime, and everyone helped set up a picnic. As usual we had spaghetti, and I stood up to go scratch more patterns in the snow. I’d gone quite a distance away from the others, and I was just about to head back when something frightening happened. A second Vector crawled out into the open, and I struggled to keep my focus on both at the same time. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, two more snaked out from my back, and each of the 4 lethal ribbons snaked dangerously through the air. “Help!!” I shouted, trying desperately to keep them all under control. It wasn’t happening. Sands and Undyne jumped up and ran towards me while Papyrus hid behind the picnic basket. Scared, I reached out towards Sans with my hands, trying to make him stop. Just short of my 10 meter reach, he finally halted.

“Alice, try to stay calm...” His voice made me feel relaxed, and my runaway Vectors seemed to calm down with me. I felt a bit more in control of them, but I still couldn’t trust myself. “You know how to control one, right?” He stepped into my radius. “Y-yeah... Stay away, I don’t want to hurt you again...” I stumbled nervously over my words. His kind smile penetrated deep into my soul, but suddenly one of my Vectors arched menacingly and rushed at him, just like the incident at Undyne’s house. I couldn’t bear to let that happen again, but nothing I did would stop the wild destructive trail. I covered my eyes with my hands, not wanting to see what awful injury Sans got this time. I waited. Nothing happened.

I looked up. Sans was standing perfectly still. My Vector had stopped dead, inches away from his chest. I felt tears rolling down my cheeks as I tried to control them all again. By miracle, one by one they started listening to me, and finally I had them under some control. Sans came closer, and I swept my Vectors behind me so I could hug him tightly. We held together for a minute, and as we let go I saw Undyne beaming with pride. “That. Was. EPIC!!” She screeched, bouncing up and down on her toes. I almost fell over. I spent ages learning to keep two, then 3 and finally all four Vectors under control, and at last I felt like I’d gotten the hang of it. We packed up the picnic and set off for home.

The excited dog had managed to build his snowdog without it toppling over. The snow poffs sat lazily around us as we crowded around the rope bridge. The sun was setting in the distance, throwing brilliant warm colours across the sky. I’d never really noticed it before, but sunsets in the Underground were always beautiful. Deep purple clouds rolled in across the sky, and we hurried home. Just as we all bundled into Grillby’s, it started to snow outside. We sat down at a table and ordered dinner, and while we waited I looked out of the window and watched the falling snow. I zoned out.

“Alice!” Undyne suddenly whispered in my ear, snapping me back to the room. As my focus came back I realised I’d started making scratches all over the table with my Vectors. I concentrated so that I could send them away, but in doing so they became visible, and everyone around me saw them clearly as they sank away into my back. Someone at the bar jumped up and pointed at me. “That girl has giant glass knives!!” One by one everyone stood up in shock and stepped back, away from me. I turned in my seat, confused. Sans, Papyrus and Undyne stood up too.

“What are you so scared of? She has them under control. It’s a special power she was born with, just move on.” Undyne sounded irritated, and it didn’t have the desired effect on the crowd. Someone picked up a knife. I started to panic. I stood up and slowly moved towards the door, and Sans started to follow me. Suddenly the monster with the knife ran at me. I screamed and covered my eyes as my Vectors burst out, but as much as I wanted to control them they took on minds of their own, flying at my attacker.

SANS POV:

Time flew by. We had to rebuild part of the house so Alice could have her own room. She spent an hour a day learning English with us, but we made sure she kept her first language by learning some of that too. Days of friendship turned into weeks and months of bonding in the snow outside and around various board games at the table. We spent a lot of time out exploring the forest, having snowball fights and making snow monsters. We introduced her to Toriel, who taught her to sing beautifully, and Papyrus always let her help with his puzzles.

As she grew up, Toriel remade her clothes to fit her. She always wore the same sweater, the same orange shirt, the same jeans and boots, and we got her a warm blue scarf too. Months turned into years, and she grew up into a beautiful little girl with big dreams and an even bigger imagination. She was lightning on her feet, always evading us both whenever we played tag. The only thing that worried us was that she sometimes became slightly distant, but she always assured us it was fine.

Alice’s 9th birthday was finally in a few weeks, and we knew the Royal Guard started taking trainees from that age, so we took her to meet Undyne. Papyrus was super excited, and it clearly rubbed off on Alice because the two were running in circles after each other all the way to the caves. Things changed when we entered the dark space though. The softly glowing water in the streams seemed to soothe her, and she went quiet as she gazed at her reflection in the water. I stood next to her in silence, looking her reflection in the eye. Her arm crept round me, and a familiar fuzzy feeling filled my heart as we hugged.

“Sans...” she mumbled. She was already just a bit taller than me. “Is Undyne nice?” “Of course she is!” Papyrus’ voice echoed through the caves. Alice let me go and reached up to him, and he got on his knees so she could reach around his neck. “I like it here.” She said. “It’s... Mooi.” “Wowie, is that Dutch??” “Yes. It means beautiful.” Alice smiled at Papyrus warmly as he stood up, and we got moving again. Soon the glowing lakes were behind us, and the rainy waterfalls flowing out from the high cave ceiling were a sign we were almost there.

After jumping in all the puddles together, we were finally standing just outside Undyne’s house. It looked like a big black fish, with sharp teeth for a front door. Alice squeaked in fear and hid behind me, so I bravely knocked on the door. The scary teeth vanished into the lips of the fish, and there was Undyne, dressed in her usual jeans and black tank top. Her bright red hair stood out against her blue scaly skin, and I could hear Papyrus behind me greeting her happily. I grinned lazily, with my hands in my pockets and Alice still hidden away behind my back.

“Hey Undyne. We have a visitor for ya.” I tried to be casual, but I was getting excited too. “A visitor, huh?” She bared her shark teeth and flashed a dangerous grin at Papyrus. “All I see is you two dorks, who’s...” She trailed off, her smug expression replaced with one of surprise. Next, it melted into a soft smile, and I could see Alice’s face in the corner of my eye, peeking over my shoulder. “Well hi there, who might you be?” she gushed, kneeling down and beaming at Alice. “I’m Alice...” she stuttered nervously. Undyne shot up to her full height again and speedily invited us inside. Alice calmed down when she spotted a chair at the large dining table and sat herself down.

Undyne put various drinks on the kitchen worktop and insisted we have one, but it turned out she only really had tea. Everyone sat at the table except Undyne, who got very energetic with the kettle and almost dropped the whole thing on the floor. Alice politely got mugs with a teabag and some sugar in each one, and sat back down next to me. The boiling water somehow made it into our mugs, and Alice became much more relaxed once she’d finished her drink.

“So... You’re Undyne?” “That’s me, head of the Royal Guard and personal trainer for Papyrus!” “Cool. You have a nice house Undyne.” “Thanks kiddo. Designed it myself! Heheheh!” They quickly got into girly topics neither me nor Papyrus could understand. They chatted about drawing on their eyes with pencils and putting paint on their nails, and Papyrus and I just sat back and let them make friends. I asked him how his training was going, and we got into our own punny conversation about weapons and odd socks.

Alice helped Papyrus cook spaghetti for lunch. As we sat down, Undyne suggested Alice could join Papyrus in training once she turned 9. She entertained us with epic stories of her battles, what crazy things had happened when she was around, and when she wasn’t, and Alice grinned when Undyne mentioned Papyrus’ puzzles. After lunch, she helped wash the dishes. “So Alice... Did you ever find out what happened to your parents?” Undyne asked.

There was an eerie silence. Alice didn’t reply. For a few moments she stood frozen in place, a look of numb shock on her face. “... I-I... I don’t know... I don’t like talking about it...” I picked up the subtle pain in her voice and sat up in my chair. Papyrus sat next to me was too busy sketching a new puzzle to notice anything. Undyne squatted and looked at Alice. “Hey kiddo... I’m sorry if I hit a nerve. Let’s never speak of this again, yeah?” Alice covered her face with her hands. “H-help...” Papyrus had noticed the change of atmosphere, and we both stood up, concerned.

“I’m sorry...”

An invisible force suddenly rammed hard into the right side of my face. It felt like an axe, cracking my skull and blurring my vision badly. The sheer force of the demonic thing sent me tumbling to the floor, and as suddenly as it assaulted me, it vanished. Everything was fading fast, but I could see Papyrus’ face above me. His eyes were glowing amber, and I felt his hand against my face, healing me with his magic. It felt warm and comforting, but I couldn’t ignore Alice. My right ear was ringing but on the left, I heard her shouting.

“Stay away from me! Please!! I don’t want to hurt anyone!!” a chair hit the floor and footsteps left the house. She’d run off by herself, upset. Papyrus’ magic faded and I could think much more clearly, although my right eye was still blurry and sore. Undyne was quick to follow Alice, but Papyrus stayed with me. I was shocked by what had happened, but I couldn’t bring myself to get mad at the poor girl. I sat up. “Brother, are you alright??” “I’m fine, Papyrus... What happened to Alice?” “Glow your eyes.” I blinked hard, and when I opened my eyes again I felt the familiar tingle of a flame in my left eye. My right eye on the other hand, didn’t do anything.

ALICE POV:

I knew what I was. When I was just 6, the first signs of my power started showing, but I hid it well. Suppressing it for so long was a stupid idea though. I snuck into Papyrus’ room at night to use his computer, reading about invisible arms what left scratches. I read stories of small children with this power being abandoned by parents who were afraid of them. I came to understand what happened to me. I was upset, but I didn’t want to scare Papyrus and Sans, so I hid it, kept it secret, tried to forget about it. But, as I grew up, my power only got stronger. I finally couldn’t hide it any longer, and Sans was an unlucky random target.

I felt so guilty. How could I allow my power to attack him? How could I let it attack anyone? I ran away from them all as fast as I could, out into the waterfalls. I didn’t stop there, and after a few minutes I saw snow. As I came out into the sunlight, I couldn’t run any further. I collapsed limply onto the snow outside the cave, disgusted by the vile ribbon of death that now followed me. It was tinted very slightly red, and clawed viciously in the snow, leaving tiny red hues in the pristine white blanket. I curled into a ball and hid my face from the light.

As I burst into tears, the ribbon rose up towards the sky. I could see its glassy surface clearly in the sunlight, but no one else could. It was insidious, going undetected until it was much too late. I cried solidly for 5 minutes when a familiar voice yelled from the cave. “Alice!! What happened?? Are you ok??” Undyne dropped to her knees next to me. With sheer willpower I calmed myself, and the evil ribbon seemed to do the same. I tried to lower it to the ground, but it resisted me, so I let it hang in the air. “Alice are you ok?”

Undyne’s face was a mixture of shock and fear. I took a deep breath and told her everything. I didn’t even trust her all that much just yet but I felt like I needed to tell her everything anyway, just because she was there next to me. The power, my parents, the fear... She seemed to understand my pain. “Alice... When I was a kid I had incredible strength. I was a freak in school. I broke my friend’s arm once, just because I got overexcited about a puppy. Just like you, I couldn’t control it so I hurt people by accident. But I learned to control it. It was such a struggle but in the end I did it. And I think you can do it too.”

I felt myself relax. Undyne’s inspiring words convinced me to start training for the Royal Guard as soon as I could. The tears stopped falling, and my invisible arm started to get shorter. I uncurled myself and flung my arms around her, and finally my power vanished. I was calm. Moments later I heard more footsteps, and Papyrus appeared in the cave entrance with Sans by his side. He had Papyrus’ bright red scarf tied around his face to cover his eye, but despite what I’d done to him, he smiled brightly at me.

“Hey, kid... You ok?” He said, worried. “I’m fine... I’m sorry...” The guilt came back. I stood up and approached him with my arms open, and he took his hands out of his pockets and hugged me warmly. “Alice? My eye doesn’t glow anymore. But that’s ok, as long as my other eye still glows I’m fine.” “I’m so sorry...” “It’s ok. Let’s go home now and talk about this, ok?” “Ok...” The walk back home seemed much longer than I remembered. I walked between Undyne and Sans, who still had the scarf tied around his right eye. No one said a word, even Papyrus had nothing to say.

We sat down around the dining table. There was an awkward silence as Undyne made tea for everyone. When we’d all finished our drinks, Sans spoke up. “Alice, please. What was that thing?” I hesitated, then spilled the first beans. “I was born like this... With these... They first came out 3 years ago but I didn’t want to scare you guys so I hid them... I snuck into Papyrus’ room to read about them on the internet, and that’s how I worked out why you found me in that bush...”

More silence. “They... They’re called Vectors... They were getting stronger and stronger and today I finally couldn’t hold them in anymore so... They came out...” Papyrus’ jaw dropped, almost to the floor. “They?? You have more??” “I have 4...” I mumbled. Undyne looked determined. “Tomorrow I’ll come by here and we’ll start teaching you to control them. They’ll only get stronger, so you have to grow with them.” “You really should have told us about this 3 years ago, Alice... From now on, don’t keep secrets, ok?” Sans joined in kindly. He smiled gently, lifting my spirits. “Ok Sans... No more secrets...”

SANS POV:

The snow crunched nicely under my fuzzy slippers as I stepped out of Grillby's into the biting cold outside. It was snowing, and the air was especially frigid. I was used to it though. I turned towards home and trudged onwards, gazing at the falling white flakes as they drifted gently down from the grey sky. Snowdin was such a small town but whenever it snowed it suddenly seemed twice its size. Blue Bear was coming my way with another present for the tree in the town square. He spent a lot of time doing that, it seemed. "Hey Sans! How are you?" "I'm great, thanks. Just going home to tell my bro a new pun I came up with!" "Ok man, take care." "You too."

Blue Bear turned and set off for the tree again, some 50 feet behind me. As we continued on our ways I started to feel the cold crawling into my bones. I shivered and lifted the furry hood of my jacket over my head and pulled up the zipper, but before I could get moving, a tiny sob broke the glassy silence. My heart jumped in my chest and I froze. I listened. For a few seconds, there was silence, and I was starting to think I'd imagined it when I heard it again, a tiny, soft sobbing sound coming from a nearby bush.

I could still feel my heart pounding in my chest. As I stumbled nervously towards the snow-covered bush, I could hear it was a child crying. I reached in between the leaves with my fingers and peeked through the branches, and there was a little girl with spectacular golden hair sitting among the roots of the bush. She was curled up in a ball, trembling like a leaf, and my heart now slowed down and sank as I realised she was alone here. I wasn’t sure what else I could do, so, as gently as I could, I looked right at her and said hello.

Her tear-stained face slowly appeared from under a mass of curly hair, and our eyes met. She tried to shy away in shock and fear, but I bravely kept my smile and greeted her again. In a sweet little voice she said, “mama?” and I looked around. There was no mother in sight. I turned back to the girl with a look of sadness on my face, and her round eyes grew wider. Shaking, she reached up to me, her tiny fingers stretched out towards me. I didn’t think twice about lifting her out of the bush. She was quite light, and she looked no more than 4 years old.

She was wearing a stripy sweater with a big black A on it, old blue jeans and little black boots. Her clothes were wet and she must have been soaked to the bone. I lowered her carefully to the ground and she made a noble attempt to stand, although she wobbled and plopped down onto the snow almost right away. I decidedly swept her up in my arms and started for home, knowing she’d probably be getting sick soon. As we moved through the increasing snowfall she seemed to calm down a bit, and soon she went quiet, her head resting against my chest and her arms tucked together across her own. I struggled to knock frantically on the door back home, but Papyrus immediately answered it. He looked just as bewildered as I did when he saw the girl in my arms.

PAPYRUS POV:

I was hardly expecting Sans to turn up home with a tiny human rescued from the snow! He barged inside and gingerly set her down on the couch before bounding up the stairs to grab a blanket. Stunned, I called after him. “Sans!? Where did you find this tiny human?!” He appeared at the top of the stairs with our best blanket in hand, raced down to the couch and quickly rid the sorry-looking creature of her soaked sweater and orange shirt before wrapping her up carefully in the blanket. She seemed half-asleep the whole time. Finally he turned to me and told me about the bush outside, and how he heard her crying. Her wet clothes were hanging up by the fireplace to dry.

The girl sat on the couch next to Sans, and the pair looked at each other in silence for  a minute before Sans finally spoke up. “Hey kiddo. I’m Sans. What’s your name?” She didn’t reply. Sans tried again, but the child didn’t say a word. Instead, she sat in silence, staring at him confused. She took a minute, then finally spoke. Neither of us were expecting what she said next.

“Name...? ... Naam?” she said in a strange accent I couldn’t recognise. Sans kept trying to talk to her. “I’m Sans.” He said, pointing to himself. She didn’t seem to engage. She did mumble something foreign, but neither of us understood. I’d been in the kitchen cooking spaghetti, but I’d forgotten all about it and focused my attention on this mysterious girl who, it seemed, most likely didn’t speak English. I sat down on the floor next to Sans and looked her up and down, then reached out my hand to her.

She looked at my bright red glove for a moment before reaching for it. Her small fingers gripped the fabric as she moved my hand towards her face, and all of a sudden a sweet little smile spread out between her ears. I was touched by her innocence, and decided I would do my best to protect her if she needed it. The great Papyrus knows when he is needed, and this tiny human needed me. I kept my gloved hand on her tiny face, and soon she started dozing off. Sans grabbed a cushion from the sofa and made her comfortable, and she went right to sleep. I was just on time to save my spaghetti from overcooking, and Sans and I sat down to lunch.

SANS POV:

I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. She was strange, but impossibly beautiful. I couldn’t find anything to say, so I sat quietly, wondering if she’d become part of the family. After lunch, Papyrus went out to set up some puzzles, so I stayed behind to babysit the girl. I searched the fridge for a snack and found a jar of pickles. I turned round, and there she was, peeking over the couch with her big green eyes. "You want a pickle?" I asked her, bringing the jar to the table. Something seemed to click, and she squeaked "augurk!", taking me by surprise.

I spun round to face her, holding a pickle in my hand. Maybe I could communicate with her! I let her get a good look at the pickle, and she reached out towards it, smiling brightly. Melting on the inside, I handed it to her, and she munched it down happily. I felt fuzzy on the inside as she repeated the funny word. "Pickle?" I said. “Augurk, augurk!” she chimed back. “This is a pickle. Pi-ckle. If you want one, you have to ask.” I said as I gave her another one. I waited a moment for her to say her word again, but this time I just smiled, responding to her with “pickle”. It took her a few tries to start saying the proper word, but soon she was gleefully skipping around, seemingly talking to herself about pickles. I remembered her clothes, and got her dressed. She seemed thankful for the wooly sweater in particular.

I sat down on the couch and sunk tiredly into the fluffy cushions. As my eyes started drooping I wondered what Papyrus was up to, but before I could fully nod off a familiar face popped up in front of me. The girl looked right at me, a serious look on her face. She'd stopped talking to herself and was quietly staring deep into my eyes. She opened her mouth. "S... Sa... ns... Ssaans..." she mumbled. I sat up and beamed at her excitedly. "That's right, kid! Try it again." encouraged, she bravely tried again. "S... Sans. Sans. Sansansans!" we were both grinning like happy idiots when Papyrus grandly threw open the front door and marched in matter-of-factly. Frightened, the kid jumped up onto the sofa and wrapped her arms tightly around me.

"Geez Papyrus," I muttered as I hugged her back. "Don't scare the kid." Papyrus calmed down, and with a sorry look on his face he appologized. The kid calmed down and approached him carefully, gave him the same serious look and said, "Naam?" in her accent. Papyrus sat down on the floor and smiled brightly at her. "My name is Papyrus." The girl gazed at him for a moment before trying to repeat his name. "Paa... Papu... Papus?" she said quietly. Papyrus repeated his name, and she got it on her second try. It was Papyrus' turn to smile. "Pickle pickle!" He was quick to give her the snack, and in the meantime I got a board game out from the shelf under the TV. We spent hours teaching the kid various English words, and by dinner time she could introduce herself and both of us in decent sentences.

After dinner, the kid seemed much more talkative. "Mag ik morgen naar huis?" Although we didn't understand what she meant, she sounded like she was asking about home. My heart sank for the second time that day as I slowly shrugged, not sure if we could ever say yes. She seemed unsettled, so I smiled and spread my arms to her. She tackled me onto the couch and hugged me close, and we spent the rest of the evening cuddling while Papyrus vanished to his room. I soon fell asleep with the kid lying on me. I woke up in the morning with the sun shining on my face, and Papyrus and the kid were playing with the board game again.

I slowly shifted onto my side and smiled at the kid. Papyrus turned to face me and said, “She speaks Dutch y’know. I have a dictionary!” I sat up straight, realizing this meant we’d finally be able to communicate with her. Papyrus brought an English-Dutch dictionary from his room. We got to work working out what she was saying, as well as teaching her some English. We came to the realisation that she didn’t remember her name. Papyrus and I stared at each other in shock. “... The kid needs a name! I, the great Papyrus, will think of one!” He grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and together we went through a list of ideas. Emma? Dylan? Maddie? If it hadn’t been for me noticing the large A on her sweater, we wouldn’t have come up with Alice. She responded well to the new name, so it stuck. “Heh. At least now we won’t be so bonely, huh bro?” “Saaaans!”

I might ask my mum if I can get it for christmas. :D but I've been watching videos of it on youtube and OH MY GOD PAPYRUS IS AWESOME!!! he's my favourite character. :D I've been looking at :iconzarla:'s comics lately and the feels are too much. ;~; when I finally get the game, I won't be going anywhere near the genocide run. ._.

Check out :iconzarla:'s comics guys! They're absolutely stunning and sure to make you at least almost cry. I actually cried, there was one comic where Sans reads a note from Papyrus saying he's going to try to befriend the murderous child, and Sans thinks he's going to die, so he starts running and then Papyrus is there holding the kid in his arms and the way Sans breaks down at the end... :crying: there's another one where Sans is feeling down so Papyrus hugs him and he turns to a teary pile of mush in his arms and it's heartbreakingly cute! :squee:

In other news, does anyone know what's up with :iconthedisneyuser:? It's been about 10 days and he hasn't said a single thing, is he ok? I'm worried about him... He's gone quiet for as much as 6 days before but this is starting to be scary... :(
